Battalion occupying front line T.30.A.4.2 to T.23.D.8.4.  Sheet 36c  S.W.
Quiet during day.  Working parties out at night.  Buried a number of bodies in Alberta Road, south of Arleaux Loop.  Bodies badly decomposed and no identification possible.  Wiring party at work on entire front completed one row of wire across front.  Party also working on trenches T.30 A.  Relief by the 16th Battalion commenced at 10.00 pm.

Battalion relieved at 1.10 am, and by 1.30 am, Headquarters moved back to Divl. Support. Battalion in shelters in Divisional Support by 6.00 am,at A.9A 3.1.  Relief here completed by the 16th Battalion, 2nd C.I.B., at noon and the Battalion moved back to Divisional Reserve west of Aux Ritz corners.  The balance of the day employed cleaning up and packing, preparatory to move to Corps Rest.

Battalion moved back to COUPIGNY HUTS,marching off at 10.40 am, and arriving at the Rest Area at 4.30 pm.  Fine day for march.  The men are billetted in seven huts,the transport in tents, the horse lines are in the open.  Company Commanders and Headquarters Officers are billeted in Town, other Officers being in huts near the men’s lines.  Battalion Hdqtrs at Q.11,C,33, Sheet 36 B. – Lieut-Col Rogers acting Brigadier.

Church Parade this morning at 10.00 am.  At 1.30 pm, the 20th Battalion Horse Show was held.  It went off most successfully.

Rained most of day.  Instruction carried on in the huts, and a general cleaning up of the same carried on.  Most of the O.R’s, who have not received anti-typhoid innoculation for 12 months were given it today.  All men given preliminary Musketry Instruction.

Very little training carried out today owing to innoculations of yesterday.  Party at work as usual at ranges.  Brigade Horse Show held in afternoon.  This Battalion won 5 Firsts, and 4 Seconds, out of 11 entries.  Draft of 50 O.R. received from England, and 30 O.R. rejoined from hospital.

During morning Battalion carried out training as laid down in syllabus.  Seventy five men went to Gas School at MAISNIL BOUCHE and had exchanges and fitting of Box Respirators done.  Working party all day employed on ranges, building the same.  Some further innoculations carried out.

2nd Div. Horse Show held today.  No training carried out, other than physical drill. 20th Bn Transport Turnout won second place, and will go on to Corps Show. Party firing on 30 yds service ranges.  Lieut-Col. Rogers returned to Battalion from Brigade today.

Work finished on ranges, and put into use up to 400 yds.  Men who have fired on short range proceeded to long range today.  20th and 21st Bns are using the short and long ranges on alternate days.

Work party supplied to prepare Sports Grounds for Brigade Sports.  Church Parade at 9.00am today.  Reinforcements 27.

No training other than physical drill.  Battalion paraded to the Brigade Sports. This Unit won 130 lbs boxing, tug-of-war, and horse back wrestling, besides several seconds.  The Assn. Football game was tied with the 18th Battalion, score 1 all.  Very successful day.

Training carried out as usual.  Men firing on the long ranges.  Work party supplied for work on Sports Grounds, for Divl Sports.  Corps Horse Show today.  20th Battalion Transport Turnout won 5th Place, easily heading all 2nd Div. entries.

Work party supplied as usual for work on sports field.  Firing on short range continued.  Training carried out as shown on syllabus.  Fine and hot.  18th and 20th Battalion football teams played off tonight for Brigade Champions.  Score- 0-0.  20 minutes overtime played.

Usual work party supplied for work on sports field.  Training carried out as usual.  Firing on long range.  Showery.  Brigadier drew for football team to represent Bde in Divl. Sports, and lot fell to 18th Battalion.  The understanding is that the Bde tie is to be settled after the Divisional Sports.

Training carried out as usual.  Firing on short range.  We supplied two working parties for duty at sports field.

Sat., Jun 23, 1917        COUPIGNY HUTS, FRANCE
No training other than physical drill at 7.00 am.  During balance of the day the Battalion attended the 2nd Divisional Sports.  This Battalion won events as follows:-
Wrestling on horseback    -    First.
Tug-of-war            -    Second.
Boxing.  130 lbs.        -    Second.
The sports were most successful.  The 18th Battalion won the final Association Football.
We have yet to play off our tie with them.

Battalion fell in at 8.15 am for Inspection by G.O.C., 2nd Cdn Division.
G.O.C. arrived at 9.00am and completed his inspection at 11.00 am.
During afternoon No 4 Coy fired on the ranges.  A tactical exercise without troops was carried out for all Officers in afternoon by Gen. Rennie., G.O.C., 4th C.I.B., and Lt. Col. Webber., G.S.O.I., 2nd Cdn. Div.  It proved most instructive.

MARCH DISCIPLINE 1.        Strict march discipline will be maintained throughout the move, proper compliments being paid.

Halts of ten minutes in each hour will be made, the Coys, taking the time from the leading Company and closing to 300 yards distance before halting.  Units are not to block cross-roads when halted; nor are they to halt in villages.  On the recommencement to move, the units in rear will again open up to 500 yards distance.

LUNCH 2.
A halt of one hour will be made about noon for lunch,
when Companies will close up to ten paces distance, and field kitchens
will be moved up to their Coys.

200 men are out on work to improve trenches.  work is slow and difficult on account of wet. Lieut SNIVELY of 35th Battalion is attached for 1 months instruction. Large parties of Huns were seen in the rear of Craters No 2 and 3 and in the vicinity of PICADILLY FARM-  As we had large wiring party on our front and working parties in the front line it was not deemed advisable to molest them.

Enemy more active again-  In the afternoon from 2 to 3, and again in the evening, our front line, supports and P and O were shelled with 4’1″ and 5’9″.  Our retaliation to afternoon shelling was very weak.  Between 8 and 9 pm our guns were very active in Crater vicinity – The hostile fire ceased.
Enemy is using “Rum Jar” trench mortar bombs at Crater No 1, fortunately his aim is not accurate. Our Machine Gun in C rater No 1 dispersed large working party.

Fairly quiet day – Front line and supports were shelled at intervals during the day – The parapet was destroyed in several places. In the evening and during night parties of Huns were seen passing to and from Crater No 2 – We got 4 rounds of 18 prs on them and were told we could have no more – in spite of the fact that there were large working parties on the enemy front line – The system of asking for all Artillery fire through Brigade seems to be a great mistake as much valuable time is wasted in this way –

Enemy Artillery very active-  About 9 pm 8 “Rum Jars” fell in vicinity of Crater No 1-  Hows [Howitzers] were turned on suspected emplacement and annoyance ceased 9.30 front line trenches 13 and 14 were shelled with 4’1” and 5’9” – A couple of direct hits were made on parapet – Our guns took on enemy batteries with apparently good results. At 9.55 enemy got two “Rum Jars” into Crater No 1 besides a large number in that vicinity – several men were wounded, including Lt. W.H. KESLICK, slightly.
At about 1.30 pm we put 7 T.M. Bombs into Crater No 2 which had a good effect – Our heavies retaliated on their front line, supports and battery positions. Enemy working parties were seen on his front, but were not fired upon until after midnight

Comparatively quiet on front line – Had a large number of Shells in vicinity of Headquarters during the afternoon -  Evening was very quiet. The enemy has large working parties on his front line, and is satisfied to leave us alone.

The Brigadier was in to see us at 4 am – Our front line is still in bad condition and much in need of repair. A great deal of work was done on front line, especially trenches 11 and 12, where the parapet was much strengthened – Enemy very quiet during afternoon and evening –

3. The relief of the 20th Bn. will be carried out as far as possible in daylight,
and will move in parties not larger than one platoon at 100 yards distance.

4. All water tins now in possession of each Company will be moved with
them on relief.  All operative equipment and supplies, except those carried on man, will be turned over as trench stores to the relieving unit.

5. All shortages of equipment and clothing will be made good by salvage of
similar articles now lying on the field so that the Bn. will move back as nearly fully clothed and equipped as possible.

All equipment to be carried on transport, other than what may be absolutely necessary for the preparation of the noonday meal today, is to be sent ot the field kitchens for loading on the transport.

No word as yet regarding the hour of our relief; but sometime today the Battalion goes into LA PANDU Billets.  Make all necessary arrangements to move quickly.  It will not be necessary to wait for a relieving unit; but you will be notified as soon as the Hqrs. of the relieving Bn. arrive at these Hqrs.  You may then move out.

1.  INFORMATION:            On a date to be notified later, the Canadian Corps will capture and consolidate the enemy’s positions from ARLEUX EN SCHELLE and FRESNOY to ACHEVILLE inclusive.  The XIII Corps on the right will attack CAVRELLE and OPPY.  The Third Army will attack farther South.

The Canadian Corps will operate as follows:
The 1st Cdn. Division on the right;  the 2nd Cdn. Division
in the centre, with the objective the line U.25.?.a 9.6 – Cross Roads U.13.c.4.2 –

3.  DISTRIBUTION:
The attack will be made with two Companies, each on a
three platoon front, in the front wave    ,  – No.3 Coy. on the right and No.4 Coy. on the left of a line T.23.b.35.10 – U.19.a.6.1.  Platoons will be in two ranks. No.1 Company will support No.3 Company, and No.2
Company will support No.4 Company,  – both Coys. moving in the same formation as the front wave and at a distance from it of 50 yards.

The leading Companies will capture and consolidate the
trenches in the OPPY-MERICOURT Line from T.24.b.36.50 – U.19.c.10.65.

The Supporting Companies will pass through the leading
Companies and dig in on the line U.19.a.7.7. – U.19.a.5.6.

The leading wave will form up on the line T.23.d.35.80 –
T.23.b.4.3.  The Supporting Wave will form up 30 yards in rear.  The Battalion Scout Officer will arrange for the marking out of the assembly trenches position and for the guides of the platoon to their places on that position.silently on Y/Z night, where the men will dig temporary cover with their temporary cover with their entrenching tools and wait for zero hour.

Touch will be maintained with units on the flanks throughout the operation.

4.  BARRAGE:
The advance will be made under an artillery barrage moving at the rate of 50 yards per minute to the enemy trenches, where it will halt for five minutes, and then advance at the rate of twenty-five yards per minute.

5.  EQUIPMENT:
Arms and equipment will be the same as those carried on
9/4/17, except that “P” Bombs will not be carried.  Supporting Companies only will carry shovels.

2.INFORMATION.
The 20th Cdn. Bn. will relieve the 28th Cdn. Bn. in the front line, with Headquarters in the BOIS DES ABRIS Trench.

3.DISTRIBUTION.
No.1 Company 20th Battalion, will occupy the right of the line;  No. 3 Company the centre and No. 2 Company the left,- each relieving the unit now holding these sub-divisions.  No. 4 Company will relieve the company of the 28th Battalion in ZIVY CAVE.

4. GUIDES.
Guides will be furnished by the 28th Cdn. Bn. at the rate of one guide per platoon to lead in the relieving units.  These guides will meet the incoming units at the junction of GUILLERMOT TRENCH and the BETHUNE ARRAS ROAD.

5 – ORDER OF MARCH:
The Battalion will rendezvous at the BOIS DES ALLEUS during the day of the 4th instant, and will later move forward so that the leading platoon will pass the road junction at F.15a.1.7. at 8 p.m.  The order of march will be as follows:

Stores.

All Officers’ spare kits are to be ready and piled in the front portion of Battalion H.Q. Hut at 11 a.m., 4th inst., ready for transport.  All baggage, stores and equipment not to be taken to the trenches will be ready for the Transport at 5 p.m.  This equipment of No’s 1 and 2 Coys. will be piled by that hour near the road at their kitchens, while that of No’s. 3 and 4 and H.Q. Coys. will be piled near the Battalion Orderly Room.

10. Cont’d.            Field kitchens, properly cleaned, will be ready for return to the Q.M. Stores at 5 p.m.

11. CAMP EQUIPMENT:
All shelters tarpaulin will be struck and folded, complete with poles, and turned into the R.S.m. for storage in Hqrs. at 3 p.m.

12. SANITATION:
The camparea at present occupied by this Battalion is to be left in a clean and sanitary condition and ready for inspection at 4-30 p.m.

13. TREATMENT OF FEET:
Certificates that the men’s feet have been treated with anti frostbite grease will be handed into Orderly Room by O.’s.C. Coys and units before leaving “YUKON” Camp.

14. TRENCH DISTRIBUTION:
Officers Commanding Coys. and units will render to Battalion Headquarters in the Right Sub-section Distribution States of their units in the Sub-section by noon on the 5th instant.  This Distribution State is to show the location of each unit by map reference.

15. TRENCH STORES:
An inventory of trench stores taken over by each unit of the Battalion will be forwarded to Battalion Headquarters by noon on the 5th instant.

16. COMPLETION OF RELIEF:
Completion of relief will be notified to Battalion
Headquarters by the code word “CANDLES.”

17. RATIONS:
The Quartermaster will arrange to issue Iron Rations to the
units of this Battalion at the rendezvous at a time to be notified later (probably 6 p.m.)  These rations are to be considered as emergency rations and are not to be used except on the order of an Officer.

Rations for Thursday, April 5th, will be delivered at the
TERRITORIAL DUMP at 10 p.m. on the 4th instant.  Each Company, including Hqrs. the trenches to be occupied and making them stronger for defensive purposes and protection.

6. O’s.C. Coys. will see that their commands go forward with sufficient
supplies of ammunition and other operative equipment.  All available trench stores will be taken over from the 15th Warwicks.

7. Rations will be delivered by limbers tonight at WATLING CRATER
(A.4.a.7.3).  If found possible to get forward of this points  units will be notified later.  Time for ration parties will be notified later.

8. Guides to all Company Hqrs. may be found at 15th Warwicks Hqrs.

1. The 4th C.I.B. will be relieved in the front line by the 5th C.I.B. tonight,
13-4-17.

2. The 20th Battalion will be relieved by the 22nd Bn. and will take up
positions in the Black, Red and Main Lines as follows:

Coys. of 22nd Bn. will relieve opposite companies of 20th Bn.  On
completion of relief No. 2 Coy. will be in the Black Line N. of BALOON TRENCH;  and No. 3 Coy. in the same line S. of BALOON TRENCH.  No. 1 Coy. will be in the RED LINE- FUSTY TRENCH- CRAMER HAUS westward to the LILLE Road.

No. 4 Coy. will be in the Red Line N. of FUSTY TRENCH to the right of the 3rd Division at about S.29.d.7.2.  Hqrs. of No’s. 1 and 4 Coys. will be in CRAMER HAUS.  Hqrs. details will be in VOLKER TUNNEL near A.4.d.9.a.

Guides will rendezvous at CRAMER HAUS at 7 p.m. today and will be
furnished as follows:
“B” Company        1 per Platoon.
Remaining Companies    1 each.
Dressing Station will be established at Battalion Hqrs.
