20TH CANADIAN BATTALION OPERATION ORDER NO.72
SECRET REF: SHEET 36B, S.E. 1/20,000 1/4/17.
1. INFORMATION: The 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade will carry out a practice attack on the Training Area tomorrow, April 2nd.
2.INTENTION: The practice will be carried out as laid down in the 4th C.I.B. “Instructions for the Offensive,” No’s. 1, 2, 3 and 4, actual conditions being approximated as nearly as possible.
3. DISTRIBUTION: The platoons of the 20th Cdn. Battalion detailed for mopping up and carrying will report as follows:
No.1 Company to 18th Cdn. Battalion at “X”
No.2 Company to 19th Cdn. Battalion at “Y”
No.3 Company to 21st Cdn. Battalion at “Z”
No.4 Company will take up a position at Brigade Headquarters on the
Training Area as Reserve Company.
4. SIGNALS: Signal communication will be arranged by the Brigade Signal Officer.
5. RUNNERS: Runners will be used in accordance with the communication scheme already issued. Four Runners of this Battalion will report to the Brigade Signal
Officer at 1 p.m. at “PHILIP CRATER” on the Training Area.
6. ARMS & EQUIPMENT: All ranks will be armed and equipped as they will be in the actual assault. Picks, shovels, scaling ladders and extra S.A.A. and bombs will not be carried.
7. CASUALTIES: Casualties will be practiced by a proportion of Officers, N.C.O’s and men, the next senior in each case replacing the casualty.
8. BDE. & BN. HQRS. Brigade and Battalion Headquarters will be established as laid down, and all reports will be sent back in accordance with 4th C.I.B. Instructions No.4
9. TIME: Lieut. L.H.Bertram will report to the Brigade Major on the Training Area at 10 a.m., for the purpose of synchronizing watches. Hour of zero will probably be 2 p.m.
10. REPORTS: Reports and messages should be sent by Officers to their respective Report Centres, care being taken to observe the regulation form of message.
11. ASSEMBLY: “X”, “Y” and “Z”, and time and place will be notified later.

20th CANADIAN BATTALION OPERATION ORDER NO. 73.
SECRET. REF: SHEET36_ B 1/20,000 APRIL 3rd, 1917.
ROCLINCOURT 1/10,000
1.INFORMATION.
The 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade will relieve the 6th Cd. Inf. Bde. in the Right Sub Section, THELUS sector, on the night 4th/5th April 1917.
2.INFORMATION.
The 20th Cdn. Bn. will relieve the 28th Cdn. Bn. in the front line, with Headquarters in the BOIS DES ABRIS Trench.
3.DISTRIBUTION.
No.1 Company 20th Battalion, will occupy the right of the line; No. 3 Company the centre and No. 2 Company the left,- each relieving the unit now holding these sub-divisions. No. 4 Company will relieve the company of the 28th Battalion in ZIVY CAVE.
4. GUIDES.
Guides will be furnished by the 28th Cdn. Bn. at the rate of one guide per platoon to lead in the relieving units. These guides will meet the incoming units at the junction of GUILLERMOT TRENCH and the BETHUNE ARRAS ROAD.
5 – ORDER OF MARCH:
The Battalion will rendezvous at the BOIS DES ALLEUS during the day of the 4th instant, and will later move forward so that the leading platoon will pass the road junction at F.15a.1.7. at 8 p.m. The order of march will be as follows:
No.1 Company
No.2 Company
No.3 Company
Headquarters
No.4 Company.
Platoons will maintain a distance of 100 yards.
6 – TRENCH STRENGTH:
Three platoons per Company will move into the line at full strength, the balance of each Company. including one Lewis gunand its crew remaining in the Transport area. 25% of the strength of the Scouts and Communication Sections will be left in the same area.
7 – CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT:
Other ranks will not carry packs. Personal effects are to be tied in packages and placed inside the packs. Issued clothing which is not being taken will be packed loose in the valise. Each man is to write his name distinctly inside the flap of his pack. Each man will carry his own pack to the Q.M. Stores.

8. BLANKETS & GREATCOATS:
All other ranks will carry one blanket per man, rolled in the ground sheet and carried en bandolier. Greatcoats will be worn. Surplus blankets will be tied in bundles of ten labelled and readyf ro Transport at 9 a.m. 4th instant.
9. BAGGAGE & KITCHENS:
All Officers’ spare kits are to be ready and piled in the front portion of Battalion H.Q. Hut at 11 a.m., 4th inst., ready for transport. All baggage, stores and equipment not to be taken to the trenches will be ready for the Transport at 5 p.m. This equipment of No’s 1 and 2 Coys. will be piled by that hour near the road at their kitchens, while that of No’s. 3 and 4 and H.Q. Coys. will be piled near the Battalion Orderly Room.
10. Cont’d. Field kitchens, properly cleaned, will be ready for return to the Q.M. Stores at 5 p.m.
11. CAMP EQUIPMENT:
All shelters tarpaulin will be struck and folded, complete with poles, and turned into the R.S.m. for storage in Hqrs. at 3 p.m.
12. SANITATION:
The camparea at present occupied by this Battalion is to be left in a clean and sanitary condition and ready for inspection at 4-30 p.m.
13. TREATMENT OF FEET:
Certificates that the men’s feet have been treated with anti frostbite grease will be handed into Orderly Room by O.’s.C. Coys and units before leaving “YUKON” Camp.
14. TRENCH DISTRIBUTION:
Officers Commanding Coys. and units will render to Battalion Headquarters in the Right Sub-section Distribution States of their units in the Sub-section by noon on the 5th instant. This Distribution State is to show the location of each unit by map reference.
15. TRENCH STORES:
An inventory of trench stores taken over by each unit of the Battalion will be forwarded to Battalion Headquarters by noon on the 5th instant.
16. COMPLETION OF RELIEF:
Completion of relief will be notified to Battalion
Headquarters by the code word “CANDLES.”
17. RATIONS:
The Quartermaster will arrange to issue Iron Rations to the
units of this Battalion at the rendezvous at a time to be notified later (probably 6 p.m.) These rations are to be considered as emergency rations and are not to be used except on the order of an Officer.
Rations for Thursday, April 5th, will be delivered at the
TERRITORIAL DUMP at 10 p.m. on the 4th instant. Each Company, including Hqrs. Company, will detail a party of two men to remain at the Transport Lines and accompany the ration limbers to the dump. On arrival therethese parties will act as guards over the rations for their respective units until such time as carrying parties detailed by the Companies come to the dump for their rations.

SECRET REF: ROCLINCOURT 1/10 000 April 10th, 1917.
THELUS 1/5 000
1. The 4th Cdn. Inf. Bde. will relieve the 13th Imperial Inf. Bde. in the line
this evening.
2. The 20 th Battalion will relieve the 13th Warwicks in Brigade Support, two companies occupying the newly constructed trenches running approximately between CRAMER HAUS (A.5.b.7.3) and TELEGRAPH TRENCH (A.6.d.Centre)
Three platoons of No. 2 Coy. will occupy the 3 strong points, ‘V’, ‘W’,
and ‘X’. No. 3 Coy. will occupy the THELUS TRENCH and adjacent trenches in A.6.c.
The exact location of these strong points will be notified later.
3. No. 4 Company will occupy the right half of the first described trench;
No. 1 Coy. the left half. Each of these Coys. will have one Lewis Gun place in position at approximately A.6.a.3.1 1/2. Battalion Headquarters will be at CRAMER HAUS and Hqrs. Details in that vicinity.
4. All men will carry both water bottles filled from the supply in tanks in
ZIVY CAVE.
5. A supply of shovels will be carried forward for the purpose of improving
the trenches to be occupied and making them stronger for defensive purposes and protection.
6. O’s.C. Coys. will see that their commands go forward with sufficient
supplies of ammunition and other operative equipment. All available trench stores will be taken over from the 15th Warwicks.
7. Rations will be delivered by limbers tonight at WATLING CRATER
(A.4.a.7.3). If found possible to get forward of this points units will be notified later. Time for ration parties will be notified later.
8. Guides to all Company Hqrs. may be found at 15th Warwicks Hqrs.
CRAMER HAUS.
9. Greatcoats and blankets may be taken forward for use in the trenches.

1. The 4th C.I.B. will be relieved in the front line by the 5th C.I.B. tonight,
13-4-17.
2. The 20th Battalion will be relieved by the 22nd Bn. and will take up
positions in the Black, Red and Main Lines as follows:
Coys. of 22nd Bn. will relieve opposite companies of 20th Bn. On
completion of relief No. 2 Coy. will be in the Black Line N. of BALOON TRENCH; and No. 3 Coy. in the same line S. of BALOON TRENCH. No. 1 Coy. will be in the RED LINE- FUSTY TRENCH- CRAMER HAUS westward to the LILLE Road.
No. 4 Coy. will be in the Red Line N. of FUSTY TRENCH to the right of the 3rd Division at about S.29.d.7.2. Hqrs. of No’s. 1 and 4 Coys. will be in CRAMER HAUS. Hqrs. details will be in VOLKER TUNNEL near A.4.d.9.a.
Guides will rendezvous at CRAMER HAUS at 7 p.m. today and will be
furnished as follows:
“B” Company 1 per Platoon.
Remaining Companies 1 each.
Dressing Station will be established at Battalion Hqrs.
