3. The relief of the 20th Bn. will be carried out as far as possible in daylight,
and will move in parties not larger than one platoon at 100 yards distance.
4. All water tins now in possession of each Company will be moved with
them on relief. All operative equipment and supplies, except those carried on man, will be turned over as trench stores to the relieving unit.
5. All shortages of equipment and clothing will be made good by salvage of
similar articles now lying on the field so that the Bn. will move back as nearly fully clothed and equipped as possible.
6. Ration parties now in waiting at the dump will be advised by Coy. com-
manders where to report at their new Coy. Hqrs.
7. Every effort must be made to prevent straggling so that each unit will be
kept intact as it moves.
8. An Officer or senior N.C.O. per Company will be sent to the new Coy.
Hqrs. to take over the area to be occupied on relief.
9. Bn. Hqrs. will be at VOLKER HAUS (A.4.d.9.9) where units will report
relief by code word “VIMY”. All Coy. Runners should be informed of this location.

20th Cdn. Battalion After Operation Order No. 76.
All equipment to be carried on transport, other than what may be absolutely necessary for the preparation of the noonday meal today, is to be sent ot the field kitchens for loading on the transport.
No word as yet regarding the hour of our relief; but sometime today the Battalion goes into LA PANDU Billets. Make all necessary arrangements to move quickly. It will not be necessary to wait for a relieving unit; but you will be notified as soon as the Hqrs. of the relieving Bn. arrive at these Hqrs. You may then move out.
East of NIEUVILLE ST. VAAST intervals of 100 yards are to be maintained between platoons, but west of that place Companies may move intact.
All water tins must be brought to the kitchens and returned to transport lines.
Working parties now detailed will complete their day’s work before moving to rest billets.
Please take decided action today re para 5 of Operation Order No. 76 of the 13th inst.
Completion of movement will be reported to Bn. Hqrs. without delay.
Disposition States must be in Orderly Room by noon 15th Inst.

20TH CANADIAN BATTALION OPERATION ORDER NO.77
SECRET REF: APRIL 16TH, 1917.
1. The 20th Battalion will relieve the 25th Bn. today before noon. Guides
rendezvous at A.4.c.4.9. Bn. Hqrs. in O.68 trench. Like Coys. relieve like Coys. Three platoons per Company only are to be taken., other platoons being left in French huts No’s 2 and 6 at F.8.c.7.7. Four Officers per company only will go in, the remainder being left at present hut in MONT ST ELOY. – later going to Transport.
2. No blankets are to be carried, but left in huts No’s 2 and 6 above, rolled in bundles of ten and labelled. Packs will be carried forward and piled in Company stacks at Ration dump, covered with tarpaulin supplied by Q.M.; and guard of 1 N.C.O. and 6 men will be mounted by No.1 Coy. Field kitchens to be established at Ration dump.
3. Completion of relief will be reported to Battalion Hqrs., with list of stores
taken over.
4. Great coats may be carried; both water bottles filled and carried. Men to
be complete in equipment; feet to be treated with whale oil before leaving, and certificate rendered to Orderly Room.
5. Personnel left at Transport not to be the same as that left out last tour.

20TH CANADIAN BATTALION OPERATION ORDER NO.80

WILLERVAL 1/20,000 17th 21st April, 1917.
1. INFORMATION: On a date to be notified later, the Canadian Corps will capture and consolidate the enemy’s positions from ARLEUX EN SCHELLE and FRESNOY to ACHEVILLE inclusive. The XIII Corps on the right will attack CAVRELLE and OPPY. The Third Army will attack farther South.
The Canadian Corps will operate as follows:
The 1st Cdn. Division on the right; the 2nd Cdn. Division
in the centre, with the objective the line U.25.?.a 9.6 – Cross Roads U.13.c.4.2 –
U.13.a.o.0. – F.18 central; and the 3rd and 4th Canadian Divisions forming a defensive flank north on the left.
The boundary between the 1st and 2nd Cdn. Div’s. will be
Sunken Road T.22.c.8.0 – F.25.a.5.6.
The boundary between the 2nd and 3rd Cdn. Div’s. will be
T.17.c.1.0 – T.18 central.
The line between 4th C.I.B. on the right and 5th C.I.B. on
the left will be T.25.b.4.3 – T.24.b.4.5 – U.19.a.5.6.
Jumping-off trenches will be established on the line
T.22.d.0.0 – T.23.b.4.5 – ??????? T.17.d.5.5.
The 4th C.I.B. will attack on a two Battalion front. - 21st
Cdn. Battalion on the right and 20th Cdn. Battalion on the left. The 19th Cdn. Battalion and 18th Cdn. Battalion will be in Brigade Support and Reserve respectively.
2. INTENTION:
The 20th Cdn. Battalion will operate within the 4th C.I.B.
boundaries, north of a line T.23.d.35.80 – U.19.c.7.7. with the 21st Cdn. Battalion on its right and a Battalion of the 5th Brigade on its left, capturing and consolidating enemy trenches and occupying the final objective U.19.c.7.7 – U.19.a.5.6.
3. DISTRIBUTION:
The attack will be made with two Companies, each on a
three platoon front, in the front wave , – No.3 Coy. on the right and No.4 Coy. on the left of a line T.23.b.35.10 – U.19.a.6.1. Platoons will be in two ranks. No.1 Company will support No.3 Company, and No.2
Company will support No.4 Company, – both Coys. moving in the same formation as the front wave and at a distance from it of 50 yards.
The leading Companies will capture and consolidate the
trenches in the OPPY-MERICOURT Line from T.24.b.36.50 – U.19.c.10.65.
The Supporting Companies will pass through the leading
Companies and dig in on the line U.19.a.7.7. – U.19.a.5.6.
The leading wave will form up on the line T.23.d.35.80 –
T.23.b.4.3. The Supporting Wave will form up 30 yards in rear. The Battalion Scout Officer will arrange for the marking out of the assembly trenches position and for the guides of the platoon to their places on that position.silently on Y/Z night, where the men will dig temporary cover with their temporary cover with their entrenching tools and wait for zero hour.
Touch will be maintained with units on the flanks throughout the operation.
4. BARRAGE:
The advance will be made under an artillery barrage moving at the rate of 50 yards per minute to the enemy trenches, where it will halt for five minutes, and then advance at the rate of twenty-five yards per minute.
5. EQUIPMENT:
Arms and equipment will be the same as those carried on
9/4/17, except that “P” Bombs will not be carried. Supporting Companies only will carry shovels.
