No casualties – 2 Coy’s 47th Bn. 4th Div. attached for instruction – 1 Coy in front line, 1 Coy in supports – See Special order attached

Fine all day – Situation quiet – “D” Co of 47th finished instruction in Front line and left for billets at 9.15 pm – Coy in support line moved into their place – One fresh Coy arrived at 7 pm. for instruction and were moved into support line – Casualties NIL

Situation on our front very quiet. – Work was carried out improving front line during the night by parties from 21st Bn – Some work was continued on parapet in Jarvis Street C.T. and in support trench. Casualties – Nil.

Sat., Aug 19, 1916 VIERSTRAATE [VIERSTRAAT], BELGIUM
Rain showers in morning, fine in afternoon –
At 2.15 pm enemy opened bombardment of our front line with Trench mortars and our support line with 4’1″s and 5’9″s shells – The bombardment continued until 4 pm, enemy also bombar shelled communication trenches with shrapnel – We retaliated with 60 lb T.M, Stokes Guns, 18 pr. F.A. and 4’5″ Hows on selected points –
Casualties – 20th Bn – 1 Officer wounded

Thank you very for posting these diary notes. My great uncle was killed on August 19th and is buried at Ridge Woods so this greatly helps me understand the specific circumstance of his death.You efforts are much appreciated.
